BACK FROM LYON
BACK FROM LYON Yesterday I returned from Lyon, slightly tanned and ready for work! Sitting on the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers in eastern France, Lyon is an interesting city. However, my holiday was Groundhog Day – get up, have a long breakfast reading newspapers in the morning, find a bar to watch the Tour de France, shower, go to a restaurant, and sleep. Everyone eats out in Lyon. There are lots of restaurants in the city; Lyon is known as the gastronomic capital of France. A traditional Lyonnaise restaurant is called a bouchon. Certified by the Association for the Preservation of Lyonnais Bouchons (L'Association de Défense des Bouchons Lyonnais), there are about 20 official bouchons in the city, but many more restaurants describe themselves as bouchons. Traditionally, they served cheap, fresh food for workers; a bundle of straw (a bouchon) was used to signify such restaurants serving food for artisans. A bouchon serves a lot of meat dishes, many of which are made out of offal. A typical menu of a bouchon will include tripe soup, chicken liver salad, pork head cheese, groins d'âne salad (donkey snout salad), gateau de volaille (chicken liver cake), boudin noir (blood sausage) Andouillette (tripe sausage), offal gratin, and breaded tripe, plus lots of pig’s trotter dishes. For me, this is not fine dining. I was not brave enough to sample any of these offal dishes – the only offal I enjoy eating is black pudding and liver! I always thought most offal is used as food but now I know that most is sent to Lyon to be eaten! Do you like offal? If so, what offal do you like eating? Have you dined at a bouchon? If not, would you dine at a bouchon? |

I am not a brave eater. I find most places make busy food. I am a simple woman with simple taste. I would pass on this fare. What did you eat while there?

Eeeeeeeeek !!!!!!!!!!!!!! That looks dreadful. Nooooooooooo to all of your questions, by the way. lol Mind you, tonight I am going to be a bit brave ... well, brave for ME anyway. I am going to cook myself some kangaroo meat for dinner. I have never tried it before. I actually bought it for my cats, but they won't touch it.

How was the kangaroo meat that the cats wouldn't eat?! I had marinated it for hours ... and it LOOKED so good. However, I really AM a shocking cook, and one of the things I very seldom cook for myself is red meat, because I usually stuff it up ... And I did. HOWEVER .... My DOGS loved it. THEY think I am a wonderful cook. I'd very much like to try it again sometime, with somebody having cooked it who CAN cook a decent steak.
