ZOMBIE ATTACK
ZOMBIE ATTACK Zombie sex, like all necrophilia, is absolutely dead boring; sex with your brother or sister is just relatively boring! In zombie films, such as the 2004 film Shaun of the Dead, humans traditionally try to kill zombies using a variety of weapons. Academics from the University of Oxford have recently developed an effective weapon to protect people from zombie attacks. The research team, led by Dr Thomas Woolley of the University’s Mathematical Institute, used algorithms developed to explain the spread of diseases. The researchers recommended several tactics, all based on mathematics, to maximise a human’s chances of survival during a zombie attack. Their model assumes three outcomes of an encounter with a zombie - the human kills the zombie, the zombie kills the human or the zombie infects the human turning them into a zombie. If facing a zombie attack, Dr Woolley said that “the priority should be running away. Don’t waste time trying to fight them.” The researchers assumed that zombies walk in a random way and calculated that a zombie walking aimlessly would take 25 minutes to cover 100 metres. But, if the human fled, it would take the zombie four times as long to cover twice the distance. Running away makes it far less likely to be caught by a zombie. The researchers then advised humans to live in fortified societies to give them more protection against zombie attacks. The academics observed that the only way humans can triumph over zombies is if they kill zombies at a faster rate than zombies are infecting humans. Consequently, they recommended “removing your fellow human survivors”. This controversial recommendation is based on the assumption that fewer humans remaining to be infected by zombies will eventually reduce the zombie population. “If you’re surrounded by people who are weak, all they are to you are potential zombies”, said Dr Woolley. If you are the only surviving human, the researchers then advised you live on an island. Maths (or math for my American friends) can be useful; surviving a zombie attack should be taught in schools! Are you worried about a zombie attack? Do you have a favourite zombie film? Did you enjoy studying maths (or math) at school? At school, I loved studying mathematics, especially calculus and geometry. I even liked doing logarithms, though I never knew why it was useful. Now I can see that logarithms may be useful to protect me in a zombie attack! |

1. No. 2. All of them, I find them hilarious. 3. Yes, but not so much later on at uni where it notched up a dozen or so levels, way above my head.

Hahaha, that first line is deadly funny, S... I am not worried about a zombie attack, I'm living one with the amount of time I spend on this site. I'm not a big fan of zombie movies but I like a few of the 'Night Of The Living Dead' movies... Brains, brains, let me eat ur brains!!! I hated maths when I was at school as the science wasn't well disseminated to my perpetually concussed brain but as an adult, going back to college, I discovered a very complex understanding of it and found it somewhat enjoyable... I developed a strong interest in calculating statistics and micromaths (calculating equations with totals that are a percentage, or much less, of the number 1 ) .

I never enjoyed history at school - too many kings, queens and dates, but I enjoy reading about history now.

Politics and literature is an interesting mix to study. My degree was a broad social science one, though I most enjoyed studying politics.

I'm not worried. I liked Shaun of the dead but not many others. Maths was fun but I wasn't too good at it. I've had to get better since. I can't agree with their logic. A single human cannot be active 24 hours a day while Zombies can. It is therefore incumbent to have some form of group. What is needed is a method of rapid diagnosis of Zombiefication so that infected people can be dealt with before they return to the larger, non-infected group.
