 I have visited St. Johns Newfoundland back in the mid 1980's for a work trip. The people were very friendly. Around 2 AM the bars close. They lock the doors so new customers can't enter; but customers can stay until 5 am. If they choose to leave sooner they can not return. I spent all night with a woman, her friend and another man who turned out to be a taxi driver. When we left the bar at 5am, we all piled into his taxi and he took us all home, no charge.

"Newfies" as they are affectionately called here, are famous for their kindness, sense of humour and good-naturedness. The musical Come from Away is set in the week following the September 11 attacks and tells the true story of what transpired when 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly in the small town of Gander.
