AFF is for Catfish

Yesterday (1/26), I was officially at the half-way point of my 3- month Gold membership, and I had a hot date! We started talking a week prior, and she wanted to meet then, but I couldn't get away. This weekend, though, I'm available. She said she would catch up with me then.

We sent a couple messages back and forth. I tried to not come across as too excited even though I was really looking forward to the weekend finally getting here. When it did, I dropped her a note: The weekend is finally here! Are you still interested in meeting? She said she was.

I had a few errands to run first, but said I should be available between 3-4 PM. I actually put those errands off and waited for her to log in. When she did log back on, something was different. Two things, actually: She had added a new, very cute picture. She also changed her location from 1 mile away to 117 miles away.

She was on IM, so I tried to reach her that way. What's going on? She never responded. So I tried a message. Why did your location change? She replied! She's going there on Monday, but she's still in DC. Oh! I asked if she still wanted to meet. She said if that's what I wanted, then yes.

Well, of course that's what I wanted! Where and when?

She followed that with a question out of the blue, something that she might have asked over the course of the past week but didn't: What do I like to do for fun? I answered the question. It's nothing horribly exciting. But she said "That's good." Then suggested 8:00 PM at my place. I asked her if she was sure. I had suggested a public place first, She said my place was good. Okay. I live in a condo. I'd meet her in the lobby. I sent her my address (but not my unit number). Just one favor, please: Let me know if you can't make it. Her response was "I'll make it."

I hadn't been horribly active yesterday, but wanted to present the best me I could. I showered. I shaved. I cleaned up around the place. I folded laundry and put it all away. I straightened up my bathroom, go out fresh towels, a wash cloth and even a new bar of soap. I brushed my teeth. Then, at 7:55 PM, I headed to the lobby, and I waited.

And waited. And waited. And then I waited a bit more.

She never showed. I checked my bbwnsa.com account multiple times. No message. I stayed for 30 minutes. I'd been stood up/catfished before, and I wasn't going to stay any longer than that. Several<b> neighbors </font></b>walked by me, sitting on one of the couches and looking at my phone. Everyone smiled. I smiled back.

At 8:30, I stood up and made my way back to our elevators. As I waited for one to show up, I watched our front doors, knowing she wouldn't walk through then, but hoping all the same.

I came up stairs, turned on Netflix and watched a couple movies. When I checked my bbwnsa.com account this morning, she had not bothered to write. I don't know if I expected her to or not, but I was not surprised regardless.

I don't think of myself as an optimist. I'd like to be more optimistic, but things like this happen and it sort of destroys any feelings you may have had that people are essentially good, honest, decent or trust-worthy. It's funny. I was thinking about this first thing yesterday morning, it being the exact half-way point in my membership. Six weeks in, if the reason for creating the account actually happened, I might even renew.

Not very likely.
